Appendicies Appropriate Costume In order to maintain the appearance of a Scottish military mercenary company of 1550-1750, it is important that members accouter themselves in similar clothing. The following is a simple guideline for members wishing to perform with Clann Tartan. Definitions of dress shall be made by the Quartermaster. Minimum requirements for performance: Men Bonnet: Navy blue wool. No dicing, pom-poms, or glengarries. Period shirt: No prints, or obvious synthetic fabrics. Great Kilt: The great kilt is best. It is easiest to "make" as it requires no sewing. It is also the most period kilt for the eras portrayed by Clann Tartan. The philabeg is a later garment worn first by the upper classes who could afford the expensive tailoring. Trews were adapted from English fashions. Trews were not in widespread use, rather they were adopted by wealthier clansmen who liked the comfort provided while riding on horseback. Footwear: Ghillies or brogues. Many Highlanders went barefoot, but shoes are a necessity owing to the surfaces of the modern world. Ghillies are very easy to make. Sporran: Leather or fur. Early sporrans were of a simple design and were an integral part of a Highlander's clothing. Stay away from the very ornate silver and horsehair Victorian sporrans, as they do not fit into any period portrayed by Clann Tartan. Belt: A stout leather one. It will be impossible to wear your kilt without one. Kilt pin/brooch: The kilt pin is an arguable accessory, but they give one a sense of safety when wearing the kilt on a windy day. Penannular style brooches work well as kilt pins and brooches. Stay away from large jeweled brooches as they are affectations. [Editor's note: We now know that penannular brooches were not worn during the Clann Tartan period and their use is discouraged. See Kass McGann's essay at Reconstructing History.] Bowl or plate: (wood or metal) These should be of a simple design and able to take some abuse. Stay away from "granite ware"(the blue and white speckled stuff) as it is not period. The bowl is best for all around use. It's hard to make a plate into a bowl. Eating utensil: Knife, spoon, fork. A knife is enough. This can be your belt knife as well. If you have a bowl you can drink from it and pick the big bits out with your knife. Spoons can be wood, metal, or horn. Forks should have 2 to 3 tines and can be forged or carved; be aware that forks were uncommon in our period. Optional accessories: Dirks Musical instruments Swords Pistols (of appropriate period) Matchlocks Jackets, doublets, or jacks Targes Cloaks Gloves/gauntlets Pole arms Wooden chests Powder horns/flasks Bows/crossbows Writing utensils Games/dice Armor Period shelters Etc. There is no limit to the things that can be added to make a complete "period" kit. With a little research, some hunting, or manufacturing, nearly anything can be accomplished. Women Chemise/blouse: A chemise is a long "blouse". It is the basic women's garment. It was often worn as a nightshirt. No prints, or obvious synthetics. While a woman wearing only a chemise in the 17th century would be considered shocking, it would hardly raise an eyebrow in today's society. Skirt: Skirts were of a simple design and were not fitted. Gathered skirts are the most authentic. Wool, linen (flax or hemp), cotton, or natural fibers are the best. Arasaid: This is the garment that sets you apart from others and shows that you are Scottish. It can be large, or small, striped, solid, or plaid. Wool or wool blends are best. Footwear: See men's description. Belt: In order to keep your arasaid on, you will need a belt. Scottish women took pride in their beautiful belts which were often so long that the extra length hung down the front of their skirt to their knees. These were highly decorated. Pocket/pouch: This is a necessary thing for 16th-18th century women, as there were no pockets in skirts. Like the men's sporrans, valuables and miscellaneous items were kept in these. Brooch/kilt pin: For wearing the arasaid, see men's description. Eating utensils: See men's description. Optional accouterments: Bodices/stays Cooking equipment Snoods Musical instruments Spinning supplies Wooden chests Baskets Cloaks Aprons Games Jewelry Period underwear Period shelters Weaving supplies Dagger/weapons Etc. Military Drill and Ceremony (Detailed in Clann Manual). 1. Pike drill. 2. Marching orders. 3. Sword drill. Performance and Payment In performance, the regiment shall seek to allow as many active members participate as possible. Exceptions may be when the management of an event limits our number, or the size of an event physically limits our number. Our preferred minimum size shall be 20 people (8 pikemen, 8 campfollowers, 2 musicians, 2 officers, or a similar combination) We should always try to maintain equal numbers of men and women. When our numbers must be limited, priority consideration will be given to: - Members who have passed muster. - Members who have participated in previous performances. - Members who have been in regular attendance at meetings and rehearsals. - Members who have appropriate period crafts which can be demonstrated to the public. - New members who have learned the drills and/or dances. - New members who have previous experience with similar groups. - Associate members may be included when there is a shortage of active members. - Skilled musicians and dancers. The Board shall determine payment for performances on an each time basis. Policies in front of the Public 1. Always consider yourself on stage. Discussion of performance shall be done off-stage. 2. Always appear in proper attire. 3. Always speak with a burr. 4. Address others with their character name or title. 5. Always use protocol appropriate to the theme or event 6. Clann members shall show proper courtesy to the public. No foul language or lewd conduct. 7. Obey the commands of Camp and Company officers respectfully, without question or backtalk. 8. Keep public safety in mind at all times. General Safety 1. You will have many pointy objects protruding from your body. Be aware of them at all times. 2. All weapons shall be sheathed and secured at all times. Proper weapons etiquette shall be practiced. 3. No swordplay unless approved by the proper authority. 4. If injured, report it to your superiors immediately. 5. Know fire safety and the location of fire extinguishers. 6. Know where the first aid kits or ambulances are located. Suggested Guidelines for the Selection of Ensigns Even though our Ensigns are not part of the 20th century chain of command, they do portray officers of the Regiment and should command the respect of the membership in general. Therefore they should be selected by the Clann according to some criteria. Clann tradition: Our first two ensigns (Todd McCall and Gary Gilchrist) were selected because of their solo Highland dancing ability. Since then, Ensigns have been selected by the Company staff. Historically speaking: The company flags would be turned over to new ensigns as part of mustering new recruits and their ceremonial oath as soldiers. Thus, the obvious time for selecting Ensigns would seem to be our Spring Muster. If our appearance schedule stays the same, this would allow two appearances (Macalester and Saukville) as well as Muster, for prospective Ensigns to "show their stuff". Obviously, our Ensigns may not be at every event, and Acting Ensigns could be appointed to give prospective future Ensigns a chance for practice. Suggested criteria for electing Ensigns (Based upon what should be expected from the ensigns. ) 1. Tradition. Continue our early tradition of considering solo dancers. 2. Flag Twirling. A public contest to display their ability to handle the flags. 3. Interpretive Skills, the ability to talk to the crowd during our military drills. 4. Command presence? The overall respect of the fellow members, and the ability/willingness to portray an officer. Selection Process For the actual selection of ensigns it has been suggested that the general membership have their voice by judging the flag twirling ability of the prospective ensigns, and that the Regimental staff make the final appointments. Ensigns shall serve for one season. Clann Tartan Sutler Guidelines The following is a guideline for Active or Associate members and outside sutlers wishing to sell their wares as part of an appearance with Clann Tartan. It is based, in part, upon our normal expectations for active members. Consult the Quartermaster or Regimental Staff if you have any questions. The year of focus portrayed by Clann Tartan is 1630. We portray a mercenary recruiting center that is currently in Scotland. Thus, all visible items of clothing, shelters, personal belongings should reflect Scotland during the early 17th century. All modern equipment, supplies, or packaging should be covered or hidden. All participants will be subject to Clann Tartan rules regarding safety and behavior. Sutlers are required to subscribe to the Clann Newsletter so they are up-to-date on Clann activities, and possible requirements or limitations at specific events. Anyone wishing to attend an event should register with the Regimental Staff well in advance Participation during the event: The goal and purpose of Clann Tartan is educational. The Clann attempts to schedule members "on duty" as interpreters for about half of the day. Outside sutlers will not be charged booth space, as long as they spend approximately half of their day "educating. " This can take several forms and can be done in combination: A) Demonstrating a period craft while minding their shop. B) Giving formal interpretive presentations, C) Participating in scheduled Clann activities, such as drills, dancing, etc. Sutlers not participating in interpretive activities will be charged for booth space at events hosted by Clann Tartan. At events not hosted by Clann Tartan, non-interpretive sutlers will register as sutlers with the event itself and pay any fees required by the event. Items appropriate for sale "Enabling items": Items of merchandise that enable our members to better interpret history - period clothing, tools, personal belongings appropriate to the year 1630. These items may be displayed and sold harmoniously in our period setting, and their availability furthers our corporate goals. Are there exceptions to this? No, not in the main camp area. Sales in our "historic site" should visually support the illusion of our historic era. However, a non-period "gift shop" (The Clann pavilion tent?) may be set up separate from the "site" where items can be sold which reflect the most liberal definition of our Bylaws. This "gift shop" will include corporate items for sale such as the Clann Manual. Members who have items for sale, but do not with to set up a shop may sell them through the gift shop. General Sales Guidelines All items should be appropriate to the year 1630. -Items should be unobtrusively marked. -No modern packaging visible. Sales area must be staffed by those selling. Sutlers will make their own arrangements for breaks, or close the sales area when unattended. Sutlers are welcome to display historically appropriate tradesman’s signs to advertise their wares. Inappropriate items will be removed from display or moved to the "gift shop" at the request of the Regimental Staff. Appeals regarding "inappropriate" items are welcome if accompanied by historical documentation. No sales of weapons or knives to children who are unaccompanied by an adult. "Gift shop" sales. All items should be suitable to Scotland, or Celtic peoples, their history, culture and traditions. Items focusing on the era between 1550 and 1750 are most desirable, but earlier or later items are permitted. All items clearly marked with price and owner's I. D. Tags from items are to be kept as a record of the sale until owner is paid -Gift shop to be staffed by those selling items; this group arranges for breaks or closes the shop when unattended. -Gift shop staff must be willing to sell any item in the shop, including corporate for sale items, and must follow procedures for keeping price and I. D. marking of all items. Clothing: See the "Appropriate Clothing" portion of the appendices. These are the minimum requirements for members. Other styles of European clothing are acceptable as long as they are appropriate to the class and trade of the person you are portraying. |
